Adam Sandler Stepped Out to Play Basketball in Heatwave Hours Before Officiating Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce Wedding (Exclusive)

Adam Sandler warmed up — literally — with some time on the basketball court before officiating the wedding of the year. The actor and comedian, 59, stepped out in the New York City heatwave in the hopes of shooting hoops before he officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding on Friday, July 3, PEOPLE reports.

The couple selected Sandler to lead their wedding day, Swift’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE, sharing that “the ceremony joined both families together and was officiated by friend Adam Sandler.”
Just a few hours before the big event, the Happy Gilmore 2 star headed out in his signature basketball shorts and a yellow T-shirt to N.Y.C.’s courts in the hopes of playing, despite the 100-degree temperatures, PEOPLE can report.
Soon after, Sandler stepped out to pick up coffees for his family as they prepared for Swift and Kelce’s wedding — though the famously casual star again stuck to basketball shorts and a T-shirt as guests began to head down to MSG in black tie attire.
Sandler was one of the few selected by Swift and Kelce to stand with them during the ceremony. The couple chose not to have a wedding party — instead, along with Sandler, Swift’s brother, Austin, served as her Man of Honor, and Kelce’s brother, Jason, was his Best Man.

Both of the newlyweds are fans of the actor — and vice versa. Sandler gushed over Swift after he attended the premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour in Los Angeles in October 2023 with his two daughters, Sunny, 17, and Sadie, 20, while admitting that she’s one of the few celebs who makes him nervous.

“You know what, Taylor Swift, because what she means to my kids, I get a little jumpy. Just ’cause I don’t wanna blow it for my kids,” Sandler said on an episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend in February 2024. “So I’m a little like, ‘Taylor, Taylor,’ like I talk a little too loud or something. I don’t stay as cool as I can.”
He added of Swift’s song lyrics, “There’s not a word my kids don’t know. I know them, too, by the way. But they know them inside and out.”
Kelce, meanwhile, is a longtime fan of Sandler and finagled himself a role in Happy Gilmore 2 — and made Sandler a fan of him in the process.
“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell,” Sandler told Entertainment Tonight in July 2025. “He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
Reiterating that Kelce is “a stud,” Sandler added that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is “a great actor and a great human.”
